TL DR: East vs West should not be a Hearts of Iron game. Of course, if Paradox somehow decides to merge the Victoria series and the Hearts of Iron series into one 1821 - 1991 game, that would be amazing, but we all know that's just a dream. I really hope that during the production of East vs West, somebody at Paradox realised this and told their colleagues to instead work on Victoria 3 and then East vs West. In fact, a Cold War game would actually be based on Victoria 2 (or hell, if Paradox is working on, a Victoria 3), with some slight changes. Technology in Hearts of Iron is not as complex as a Cold War game should be, there is no economy whatsoever (unless you count industry, but even that's not deep enough), and there is no system for the proxy wars the Soviet and the Americans fought (except for basic stuff like lend-lease and volunteers). In fact, the Cold War was just an economic and technological battle between the United States and the Soviet Union, and Hearts of Iron simply cannot represent this with its current mechanics. Even though nearly half of the world fought in the 'war', there was no real plan to attack Washington D.C, Moscow or any other American/Russian city. The United States did not send naval units to attack across the Pacific, the Soviet Union never made an Alaskan invasion. The problem is that the Cold War was never a global war. Therefore, it could very easily be extended to World War I, or hell, even the Thirty Years War and the Napoleonic Coalition Wars (obviously, with equipment and tactics changes and whatnot).
The thing is, Hearts of Iron is a game about global war. Why, you ask? Simply because the Cold War wasn't about the 'War', it was about the 'Cold'. Unfortunately, Paradox cancelled it, and this has led many people to think that Hearts of Iron 4 is going to have a Cold War DLC. Playing as the U.S or the U.S.S.R would have been extremely fun. East vs West would have been a very great game: after all, the Cold War was one of the closest wars in history and it was (quite literally) anybody's game.
